David, Ashlee and Me

Friday, May 02, 2008

This was apparently what happened yesterday morning at David’s parents’:

Ashlee went berserk, as usual, when the postman came to deliver post. D’s dad opened the door to get the huge bundle of letters left outside the door, stupid dog dashed out and went after the postman. Silly postman panicked and ran. D’s dad ran after dog and postman, D’s mum trailing behind.

By the time D’s dad caught up with Ashlee, she was in the middle of the road. Luckily, there were no cars then.

Postman was visibly traumatised, said he would report this to the post office (according to D, they will issue a warning on our uncontrollable vicious dog, and if it happens again, they can refuse to deliver post to the house).

Of course D’s parents were not thrilled with Ashlee’s little adventure. I don’t blame them…

I kept looking at Ashlee last night and this morning – the way she snuggled in bed, the way she tried to lick our faces as if to tell us how much she loved us, the way she looked back at me with those big brown eyes. How can such a lovely creature act in that horrible manner to a harmless man just a few hours ago?! I know she hates postmen (or anyone who tries to put stuff through our door, or simply passing by), but most of the time I condone her convulsive barking as she is simply doing her job as a watchdog. And to be honest, if and when she actually gets physically close enough to the “intruder”, she just ends up sniffing them, and perhaps tries to lick them to death.

I haven’t witnessed anyone running away from Ashlee, so I really can’t tell what she would have done to the postman if she managed to get to him. Would she attack him, give him a nip on his ankle, or simply just try to befriend him? I really have no idea. And I am truly worried. What if the postman had decided to kick her instead of running away? What if there were cars on the road then?

Just the thought of Ashlee getting hurt is enough to bring tears to my eyes, I will not be able to handle it if anything untoward happens to her…

cinnamon hates the mailman, ups man, and anybody who walks up the walkway to the apartment. so i think it's their instinct. but if you are concerned about ashlee dashing out to the streets, it would be good to train her to stay within the bounds or listen to a command even when she's all hyped out. dogs need an alpha-character to keep them in check. she's a darling - no doubt about that ;)

oh and congrats! sorry i read this blog a tad late :P
